Match report: Frederiksberg Rugbyklub vs. Rugbyklubben Speed, 37-24 (17-14)

The stage was set for a dramatic final between the number one and two teams in the league when the men’s team played their last Super League match of the year on Saturday October 26 against the defending champions from Frederiksberg Rugbyklub.

Speed needed a win by a minimum of six points to take the gold, but with Frederiksberg and Speed’s many close duels in mind, it was no small task.

Unfortunately, the task also proved too big for the yellow and green, who despite a hard-fought match were beaten 37-24 and thus had to settle for silver medals in the 2024 tournament.

It was Speed who got on the board first with a penalty kick by Joakim Calmar in the very early stages of the match. Then Frederiksberg answered right back with lightning-fast play that was converted into a try to make the score 5-3. And so it went back and forth until halftime, when Frederiksberg was ahead 17-14.

Everything was still open after the break. However, Frederiksberg quickly pulled away and took the lead with a couple of tries. But Speed was not going to be knocked out, and even though it all suddenly looked difficult, Speed brought themselves back into the match with two quick tries in quick succession.

Shortly afterwards, Speed actually had the opportunity to take the lead via a maul right down on Frederiksberg’s five-meter line. Speed scored, but the referee whistled for an obstruction and thus a penalty to Frederiksberg. A few minutes later, Frederiksberg scored at the other end. And shortly after again to make the final score 37-24.

After the match, Christian Philip Jørgensen and Federico Haedo were named men of the match from Speed.

Congratulations to Frederiksberg Rugbyklub who deservedly lifted the trophy. We look forward to a rematch next year.

The men’s team plays their last match of the year on Saturday, November 2nd at home. Here, DTU Exiles from Lyngby awaits in a friendly match.
